Dear Governor Schwarzenegger: 
  
I live on the Central Coast, and consider our oceans among the area's most valuable assets. The vibrant health and diversity of marine life here draws tourists and recreationalists, making a substantial contribution to our regional economy and our unsurpassed quality of life.
  
As a candidate for Governor, you promised to protect the California Coast. I was therefore very disappointed to hear that your administration plans to shelve further work on the Marine Life Protection Act. The MLPA provides long overdue protection for California's threatened marine habitats and wildlife. I am concerned that the state's budget get balanced, but I encourage you to seek creative solutions to move forward with the MLPA with minimum expenditures. I understand that partnerships with private funding sources are possible, and I urge you to pursue them. In the Monterey Bay area, partnership with the National Marine Sanctuary's new Marine Protected Areas process presents a great opportunity for efficient State/Federal collaboration. Budgetary concerns need not and should not stall this important work. Moving forward with the MLPA now will cost far less than repairing the ecological damage the law is designed to prevent. We cannot afford to wait to protect California's oceans.
  
Californians are united in their support for ocean and coastal protection. I hope your administration will take immediate action to pursue all possible alternatives for getting the MLPA moving again and protecting our coast for future generations to use and enjoy.
